It depends on many factors, but notably your technical background and level of technical competence. However, the more likely answer is No.
The reason I believe it can be possible is because there are two categories of data scientists:
1. people who are already doing data science-like work, but they are not called data scientists in their job titles.
2. people who are called data scientists, but you wonder why they are called so if you look at what they do, or what they are capable of doing. It is very easy for management to change job titles of some staff to data scientist, even without full consideration.
There are very many people in both categories above. Mastering dara science becomes an illusion created by the above classification. The first category deceptively think they have not mastered data science, while the second category deceptively think they have.
It can be easy to formally transition to data scientist for the first category within 3 months. After all, mastering data science is no longer a big deal for them.
